The Cedar River Trail is a peaceful outdoor getaway running right through Renton. Spanning just over 17 miles, this trail follows the Cedar River from Lake Washington to Renton's neighboring cities. Whether you're biking, running with friends by the river, or simply watching the sunset over the river, this trail offers miles of endless adventure, woven right into the fabric of the city.

Overview & Access

Cedar River Trail is a multi-use path that follows the Cedar River, offering riverfront and treescape views. You can pick your own adventure on the trail and go as far as you prefer to go.

To start at the official start of the trail, head to the lake. You'll start near the Renton Rowing Center and follow the trail from there. Most people hop on at the Cedar River Trail Park near the Renton Community Center, since there's plenty of parking and is a popular spot for dog owners, with the dog park nearby.  Ron Regis Park is another good starting point. It is more in the middle of the trail, so you can choose to travel towards Renton or out to Maple Valley.

The trail is paved completely in Renton, but does feature a soft surface for the last five miles. At Maple Valley the trail intersects the Green-To-Cedar Rivers Trail, which runs through central Maple Valley, then continues to the more secluded area. This soft-surface segment is popular with off-road bicyclists, joggers, walkers and equestrians.

Parking is provided at both ends of the trail, and at numerous locations along its length.

Activities Along the Trail

This is a popular trail for road biking, running, and walking, but you can still enjoy some solitude during quieter times of day.

It is a very popular cycling route, and for good reason. It stretches for miles into neighboring towns, with beautiful views of treescapes and the river. This route makes a great "out and back" adventure, with Renton being a great beginning or end. If you're needing those wheels serviced, head to our local bike shops GHY Bikes and Center Cycle.  Please note that bikes aren’t permitted on the first 0.6 miles of the trail from Renton, but you can take Nishiwaki Lane and then hop on the trail later.

This trail is also perfect for running and walking. The shady treescapes and breeze from the water offer a peaceful outdoor experience. Plus, it's a great spot to spot bald eagles, blue herons, and seasonal salmon runs. If you want the company of others that's not just the fish nearby, join the community every Saturday morning at the Renton parkrun, a welcoming, no-pressure 5K beginning at the Cedar River Trail Park. The shady treescapes and breeze from the water offer a peaceful outdoor experience as you enjoy the trail.

Coffee and Snack Pairing

Pair your outdoor trail time with a refueling at one of Renton's local spots. The trail takes you right close to downtown, perfect to stop in at The Rose fora signature vanilla lattee, paired with fresh bakery goods or savory scones to enjoy before taking a stroll down the trail. Or pair a rich espresso drink or handcrafted latte with one of Common Ground's signature, scratch-made specialty cupcakes for a delicious post-walk reward. The Cedar River Trail connects smoothly into the heart of The Landing, Renton's premiere urban village full of shops and restaurants.

Pack your walking shoes, grab your bike, and take a well-deserved break along the Cedar River Trail this week.
