A Legacy of Local Pubs
Rubattino's Diner & Lounge has been a longtime cornerstone of downtown Renton. The business originally opened in the late 1920s as The Owl Café, quickly becoming a bustling community hub. According to Renton Then and Now, “At its height of popularity it was open 24 hours/day to meet the demand of locals, Boeing workers, and truck drivers. (Before I‑405 and the floating bridges, the highways went through Renton).” Around 1956, The Owl Café was renamed Rubattino's, and the Owl Annex became the Owl Room, continuing the tradition of serving Renton's working families and travelers. The current owner has completed an extensive remodel that thoughtfully modernized the space while preserving its classic diner character—counter service, cozy booths, and the welcoming atmosphere generations of locals remember.
Originally built in 1973, Doofer's Bar and Grill traces its name back to its first owner, Walt Grif‑Inn. The business entered a new era in 1982, when Gus Routos purchased the tavern after 11 years working as an accountant. With deep experience in a family long involved in the restaurant industry, Gus brought both ambition and tradition to the Renton establishment. At the time of purchase, Doofer's was a simple tavern—no windows, two pool tables, and a small kitchen—far from the spacious bar and grill locals know today. Gus's vision unfolded gradually, culminating in a major remodel in 2000, when he transformed Doofer's into an all‑ages sports bar and grill. The renovation shaped Doofer's into the warm, family‑friendly neighborhood gathering place it has become, offering hearty meals, televised sports, and a welcoming atmosphere for all ages.
For more than six decades, The Spot Sports Bar and Grill—historically known as The Spot Tavern—has been a beloved gathering place in Renton. Its long history includes some uniquely Renton stories: before the Green River levees were built in the 1960s, the Kent Valley often flooded, leaving customers to arrive from the west by rowboat. And before IKEA and the nearby business park existed, the area was mostly marshland—so much so that patrons would go duck hunting for their dinner just across the street. Today, The Spot is known as a lively, welcoming neighborhood sports bar where generations of locals have shared meals, memories, and community spirit.
