Perched high above downtown Renton, Erasmus—a 700-pound, 25-foot-long aluminum dragon—has been watching over the city from the roof of the Old Western Hotel (826 S. Third St.) since April 2019. More than a striking piece of public art, Erasmus tells a story about Renton’s creativity, history, and evolving identity.

How the Dragon Came to Be

The idea for Renton’s rooftop dragon began in 2016, initiated by the Renton Municipal Arts Commission and envisioned by commissioners Marsha Rollinger and Mitch Shepherd. The goal was ambitious: enhance downtown, spark curiosity, promote tourism, and celebrate Renton’s connection to storytelling traditions found across many cultures.

Dragons—symbols of strength, wisdom, protection, and imagination—were a natural fit. The concept also nods to Renton’s role as a hub for gaming culture, most notably as home to Wizards of the Coast, as well as the city’s deep ties to aviation and innovation.

Design with Meaning

Created by Western Neon, Erasmus was carefully designed to appear as though he has just landed on the rooftop—a playful reference to the building’s history, including roof damage caused by past earthquakes. His glowing LED eyes and color-changing mouth bring the sculpture to life, especially after dark, making him impossible to miss.

Why the Name Erasmus?

The dragon was named Erasmus in honor of Erasmus Smithers, Renton’s founder—connecting the city’s past with its present and future in a distinctly imaginative way.

Landing Day and Community Celebration

After a three-year development process, Erasmus was officially unveiled on April 13, 2019, a day now celebrated annually as “Landing Day.” The celebration often includes family-friendly activities like a Dragon Egg Hunt and a themed street festival, reinforcing the sculpture’s role as a living part of Renton’s community culture.

A Symbol of What Renton Is Becoming

Erasmus is more than a rooftop landmark. He represents Renton’s commitment to public art, creative placemaking, and its growing identity as a cultural, arts, and gaming hub. Whether you’re visiting for the first time or have called Renton home for years, the dragon is an invitation to look up, stay curious, and be part of the story.

Dragons, long associated with strength, wisdom, and protection, reflect the city’s ties to storytelling, innovation, and gaming culture. The project was designed to spark curiosity, celebrate local culture, and bring people together, creating a bold and imaginative landmark in the heart of downtown.

The Rooftop Sculpture

Dragon install in downtown Renton

From concept to installation, bringing Erasmus to life took three years—from 2016 to April 2019. Built by Western Neon in their shops, the 25-foot, 700-pound aluminum dragon was carefully lifted by crane onto the roof of the Old Western Hotel. Designed to look as though he has just landed, Erasmus lights up downtown Renton day and night.

A Name for the Dragon

First celebration of the Dragon's Landing in downtown Renton

The dragon’s name, Erasmus, was chosen by the public during a naming competition at the inaugural celebration. Community members submitted suggestions, and by popular vote, Erasmus rose to the top, honoring Renton’s founder while giving the dragon a meaningful connection to the city and its residents.

Dragon’s Landing & Community Celebration

Erasmus inspired the annual Dragon’s Landing Celebration, a beloved community tradition filled with art, games, and imagination. Each year, Wells Avenue transforms into a lively street fair featuring performances, hands-on activities, artisan vendors, and magical moments for all ages — all honoring the dragon who watches over our city.

From exploring the Dragon’s Hoard to joining a quest, the day is all about creativity, connection, and community pride.

The fun begins early with favorites like the Dragon Egg Hunt, Window Decorating Contest, and Student Poster Contest — inviting everyone to take part.
